The Misadventures of a Commuter

sunny_in_philly_cereal copyAs a commuter, I spend a great deal of time in my car, and much of that time is spent in traffic. While I’m stopped in a sea of cars, I start to look around and observe the drivers around me. Although I’m often the one entertaining the cars around me with my musical performances, sometimes I happen to find people I just can’t look away from.

As I’m generally in a rush going out the door, I’m a big fan of eating breakfast in the car. However, I try to eat things that are car-friendly like granola bars or muffins. One day I was stopped at a red light. I looked over at the car next to me and I found a man eating cereal in his car. Tell me, how is that car-friendly? How do you eat cereal while still holding on to the steering wheel, without getting cereal in your lap? Needless to say, when the light turned green, I kept my distance from him. Not only did I not want this distracted driver to hit me, but I didn’t want to put myself at risk should I bust out laughing at the man if he dumped cereal in his lap.

As I was driving home the other day, I was stopped behind an older woman who was fixing her hair in her rearview mirror. She took her bangs and proceeded to place an elastic around them and fan them out into a waterfall. She messed around with it for a few minutes to make sure it was flowing evenly on both sides. I’m not going to lie, it was one of the funniest things I ever saw. All I could see was a Pebbles ponytail sprouting out of her head, flopping back and forth when she looked around. I was trying to figure out how I would explain it if I hit her car because I was laughing so hard at her hair. Don’t worry, I was able to collect myself before the light turned green.

So, how about you? What’s the craziest thing you’ve observed while driving, or are you the one people are watching?
